Personal Accident Insurance
Personal Accident insurance protects you in the event of an accident that results in bodily injury. It covers most all accidents, from falling off a motorbike to falling on the sidewalk and bruising yourself. The Coverage is at public and private hospitals with no deductible or copay. K-bank and Bangkok Bank offer Accident Insurance policies to customers for reasonable pricing,
NOTE: This type of insurance can be used in addition to private hospital insurance for minor out patience services, using this insurance will keep your major medical healthcare insurance premiums from increasing when minor care it is used.
It is also a good idea to have this type of insurance if you drive a motorbike.
Vehicle Insurance
Vehicle insurance in Thailand is different from that in western countries is several ways. So please read this careful to understand it if you plan to own a vehicle and drive.
All vehicles are required to be insured with the required “government insurance policy” This is issued at the time of purchase and also includes property tax and license plate / registration fees. This provides a very minimal coverage, it is recommended that you get additional insurance through a private insurance company.
Note: If you buy a new car or truck under a loan. It is required that you have top level Private auto insurance (typically costing 15-to-30,000 a year) for the first few years of a new vehicle. After this time frame, the amount of coverage can be reduced, typically lowering the costs to 7 to 10,000 Baht.
There are different liability while in driving in Thailand compared to western countries, both civil and criminal. So again, read carefully that your risks and responsibilities are before driving.
What to do if you get in a vehicle accident… First, call your insurance company, the number is on the Window sticker if you have a car or truck. Then let them talk to those are the seem and the police if needed.
Life Insurance
Thailand does have many forms of Life insurance available in many places, from your Thai banks, private companies and under policies maybe offered under many types of contracts.
Did you know Expats should have a Thai Will?
Thailand does not recognize western country Wills. If you have significant assets in Thailand. It is wise to get a will here with a Thai lawyer, since all Wills must be written in Thai to be legal. A basic Will may cost you in the area of 4,000 baht while a complex Will, can would be more costly. If an expat died in Thailand that has no will, their assets maybe lost, or it can take months or years to transfer to the appropriate recipient, this would also be very costly to do.
