The Amazing Thai Healthcare System is rated among the best in the world. The Health Care Index, which ranks the top 89 countries according to factors that contribute to overall health, ranked Thailand’s health care system in 13th place.  Thailand was ranked higher than countries such as Norway (15th), New Zealand (16th), Germany (17th), Switzerland (18th) and the United States (30th). Of the 89 countries surveyed, South Korea’s healthcare comes in 1st place.

Thailand healthcare is also a world leader in medical and wellness Tourism. Thailand’s Private Hospitals have high-quality medical facilities, world-class medical professionals, and affordable prices. Pricing is significantly less than comparable services in western countries, as much as 90% cheaper than Americans Services and frequently provide a high quality of service and care, more advanced treatments and technologies, faster treatments scheduling and a simpler billing system.

You might also find it comforting to know that communication with medical staff is usually smooth, as most doctors and the majority of nurses are proficient in English. Mast doctors have trained and practiced in western institutions, where English proficiency is mandatory for obtaining a medical degree. In private hospitals, you can expect an even higher level of English proficiency among the staff.

There are 2 types of Thai Healthcare Hospitals in Thailand.  These are “Public” and “Private” hospitals. Here are the Pros and Cons to each;

  1.  Public Hospitals – Are government funded hospitals that the majority of the Thai people use, additionally, qualities Expats can also use.  It has many of the same doctors and services as the private Hospitals. The costs are drastically less. Public Hospitals tend to be much busier and wait times can be significantly longer.
  2. Private Hospitals are more of a VIP service, generally considered a step-up in quality over western top level hospitals, it all categories. Private hospitals are privately funded, as your world expect. They provide more “personal touch” services and extras, especially regarding expediting your wait times for appointments with specialists and time of visits and treatment scheduling. While the costs are higher than the public hospitals, Private hospitals are generally still significantly less costly than western hospitals. Most Expats classify these as excellent VIP facilities, to which here is no equivalent available in western countries. Note that not all private hospitals are the same. Some private hospitals can be 2-to–5 times more expensive compared to other private hospitals.

NOTE: When comparing medical costs between a top level U.S. based Hospital and Thai Private hospitals costs are on average 80%+ cheaper, while the cost difference between U.S. hospitals and Thai Public hospitals can be 95%+ cheaper. This Frequently equates to Expats with full coverage good healthcare in the USA paying more for their deducible and co-pay than the entire billing costs of a Thai hospital with any insurance. Some International Healthcare Insurance systems maybe honored by the Thai hospitals and some are not. You would need to contact your insurance provider with the details of each treatment needed to confirm if you are coverage. Frequently, when you are covered though international insurance, you are still required to pay out of pocket and then submit your receipts to the insurance company for reimbursement later.

Thai Clinics

Thailand’s plethora of clinics offers a wide range of beauty treatments and medical procedures. Similar to 7-11s, clinics are easily accessible throughout the country. It’s advisable to seek referrals and compare options before selecting a service, given the varying quality and prices. Generally, these clinics are safe, require no appointments for most services, and provide quick treatment for checkups, minor procedures, and blood tests.

Where to get Prescriptions filled

Getting prescriptions filled it not handled the same way as western countries do, if you go to a hospital and get a prescription, it it will be given to you at the hospital pharmacy and billed as part of your hospital treatment.  

For most common prescriptions, you can go directly to one of many local pharmacies, unlike western countries, no prescriptions are needed for most  medications. There are some medications that are banned or at least very difficult to get as the government has labeled them harmful. An example of this is ADHD medications such as Adderall and Ritalin.

Note: Franchise stores such as Boots, Watson’s are beauty and vitamins supply shops, they do not a a lot of pharmaceuticals.  There are many pharmaceuticals stores that can nearly all Medical needs with a prescription. But there are a few drugs that need a medical doctor’s prescription. There are also a significant list of medications that are available in western countries that are beaned in Thailand. Some banned medications are: ADD, ADHD medications such as Rydalin and Adderall.
